A local fixture at Sandy Beach every weekend is Eddie Tadeo.    He’ll be at one end of the park flying his kites.  He puts them thru their paces.                                                                     Watch long enough and he’ll invite you to try flying his high performance kite.  When you stop and say hi ask Eddie how many time he’s seen Avatar.

Go Fly a Kite

If you find yourself wandering around Oahu on a weekend, wander over to Sandy Beach. If you don’t care to get wet and sandy you can stand on the green grass and fly a kite. Didn’t bring one with you? No problem. If you see a short brown skinned man, by the name of Eddie, standing in the park flying a kite. Just walk over and introduce yourself and ask “Can I fly your kite?” Pretty soon the sun will be setting behind Koko Crater and you’ll be an expert kite flier.

Photo Contest

I got an email reminder of a photo contest at Outdoor Photography Magazine Top 100 Iconic Locations. I decided to put several in click to take a look at one of them.There are alot of good ones and you can vote for your favorite starting August 15th. Here’s one I didn’t include from a couple of years ago. The surf was really pounding at Sandy Beach and only the really good or extremely stupid would go for a ride. That’s the blowhole and lookout in the background.

How’s your Memorial Weekend going? On Saturday I helped some of my hang gliding friends launch from Kamehame Ridge. You’ll find pics of that at my Smugmug site.
On my way home I stopped at Sandy Beach to visit with a friend and fly his kite. Meanwhile the participants of the DJ Johnson 3-Day Round the Island Races Sailing Regatta went by. I sailed with my father as a boy and it was impressive how close these large sail boats tacked to the shore.

The lead boat in this picture started tacking towards us a few minutes later. The boat came within one hundred yards of the shore before turning out into the channel.

It’s a wet job

Water skills a necessity.
